This is an excellent way to give your verbena a gentle boost during the middle of the growing season when they might be looking a bit tired. Timing and frequency

Avoid fertilizing during the middle of a very hot day, as the plant may be under heat stress and less able to process the nutrients. As the season begins to wind down in late summer or early autumn, you should start to reduce the amount and frequency of your fertilizing. You want to avoid encouraging a flush of soft, new growth just as the cooler weather and potential frosts are approaching. This late-season growth is often very susceptible to cold damage and can weaken the overall plant before it enters its winter rest. Letting the plant naturally slow down will help it prepare its internal chemistry for the coming dormant period.

Soil pH and nutrient availability

We have briefly mentioned soil pH, but its importance for the nutritional health of your purple verbena cannot be overstated. Even if you provide the perfect balance of fertilizers, the plant will still struggle if the soil chemistry is not right. When the pH is outside of the ideal range, many essential nutrients become chemically bound to the soil particles and cannot be taken up by the roots. You can also use “acid-loving” fertilizers that are specifically formulated to help lower the pH of the soil around the roots as they are applied. Regular monitoring will help you keep the soil in the sweet spot for your plants.

Over time, the addition of organic matter like compost will naturally tend to buffer the pH of the soil toward a neutral range. This is yet another reason why building healthy soil is the most sustainable way to manage the nutrition of your garden. A well-buffered soil is much more resistant to sudden changes and provides a more stable environment for both the plants and the beneficial soil organisms.
